British Basketball League Opens Season with Lions Eyeing NBA Showdown
The Super League Basketball season begins with London Lions defending their domestic quadruple and preparing for a friendly against the Portland Trail Blazers. The league expands to 10 teams with the addition of Liverpool Basketball. Manchester Basketball recently became the first British team to win a qualifying round in the Basketball Champions League.
The Super League Basketball campaign tips off with ten clubs, adding Liverpool Basketball to the existing field. London Lions enter as defending champions of all four domestic men's competitions, having swept the SLB Championship, Playoffs, Cup, and Trophy last season. Their schedule includes a landmark exhibition against the Portland Trail Blazers on 12 October, marking the first NBA matchup for a British side.
Manchester Basketball recently made history as the first British team to win a Basketball Champions League qualifying round, defeating Wurzburg Baskets. Bristol Flyers return to the European North Basketball League, where Manchester finished as runners-up last season. Lions CEO Lenz Balan highlighted the loan signing of Keenan Evans, a EuroLeague winner, as part of efforts to improve on last year's eighth-place EuroCup finish.
This season could raise British basketball's international profile, particularly through the Lions' NBA exhibition and Manchester's Champions League breakthrough. Wider recognition may attract new fans, sponsors, and investment into the domestic league, potentially strengthening youth pathways and grassroots participation. However, sustained growth depends on competitive balance across all ten teams, as deeper rosters and European commitments could strain smaller clubs' resources.
