Christian Eriksen has left German second-tier club Wolfsburg by mutual consent, three months after collapsing during a Denmark friendly. The 34-year-old midfielder's contract was due to run until 2027. Eriksen said he wants to be close to his family in Denmark.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent roughly a year ago following his departure from Manchester United, appearing in 34 matches. His contract was originally set to expire in June 2027, but the mutual termination comes just over three months after he collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in June. He has not featured in any match since that incident.
The 34-year-old previously suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match in 2021 and has played with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator since 2022. Wolfsburg's sporting director Dieter Hecking stated the decision was left to Eriksen, who requested the contract termination to be closer to his family in Denmark. Eriksen's extensive career includes stints at Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan, and Brentford, amassing 151 international caps.
