IOC shifts 2030 Olympic hockey from Nice to Lyon
The 2030 Winter Olympics ice hockey tournaments will be held in Lyon instead of Nice, with the LDLC Arena and Hall Tony Gauthier hosting games. The move came after funding disagreements and concerns about temporary rinks at the soccer stadium. Speed skating will be in the Netherlands, while other ice sports remain in Lyon.
The relocation stems from practical and financial hurdles. Organizers had proposed placing two temporary rinks on the pitch of Nice's Allianz Stadium, but unresolved funding disputes and questions over the women's tournament site made the plan untenable. Concerns also arose about the durability of temporary ice surfaces over a demanding two-week schedule. Lyon's LDLC Arena, adjacent to Olympique Lyonnais's stadium, will serve as the primary venue, with a capacity near 11,000 and a test run at the 2028 IIHF World Championship. The secondary Hall Tony Gauthier, a 1905 concert hall, will be retrofitted with an arena, echoing the approach used at Milan's Rho exhibition center for 2026.
The 2030 Games remain highly decentralized. While Lyon hosts all ice disciplines and the main media center, speed skating moves to Heerenveen, Netherlands, and snow and sliding events are spread across the Briançonnais cluster, including Courchevel and Val d'Isere. The Olympics run Feb. 1-17, with the Paralympics following March 1-10.
This venue shift could streamline operations for hockey teams by consolidating ice sports in Lyon, but the wider geographic spread—with speed skating in the Netherlands—may increase travel fatigue for athletes and complicate spectator logistics. Local economies in Nice may lose anticipated tourism revenue, while Lyon gains a significant boost. The decision also signals that temporary rinks on soccer fields are viewed as risky for high-intensity tournaments, potentially influencing how future Olympic hosts approach venue planning.
