Rockliffe Resort Unveils Extensive Renovation and New Dining
Rockliffe in Hurworth-on-Tees has reopened after a multi-million-pound transformation, featuring a renovated Hawtree-designed course, new accommodation, a spa, and a restaurant led by James Close. The course measures 7,879 yards from the back tees. The resort also includes tennis and padel courts and a gym.
The championship layout measures 7,879 yards from the back markers, a distance that ranks among the longest in Britain. Every hole carries five tee options to suit different skill levels, and the putting surfaces use creeping bent grass grown to USGA specifications. Bunker work continues through 2026, supported by fresh equipment and a larger greenkeeping staff.
The wider estate covers 375 acres and now houses 43 individually designed guest rooms and suites, a 50,000-square-foot spa with 11 treatment rooms and a 20-metre indoor pool, plus tennis and padel facilities. Restoration of the Grade II-listed East Wing and Old Hall preserves historic character while adding contemporary interiors. Dining spans the 36-cover ATLAS restaurant, Rialto, Ro cocktail bar, The Morning Room, Café TERRA and The Clubhouse.
The reopening could reshape the North East's luxury hospitality landscape, potentially drawing affluent golfers and leisure travellers who previously looked to southern England or overseas resorts. The combination of an exceptionally long course, fine dining and extensive wellness facilities may broaden the resort's appeal beyond golf enthusiasts to spa visitors and corporate groups. Local employment and tourism revenue could rise, although premium pricing — rooms from £550 per night — suggests the offering targets a high-end market rather than casual visitors.
