Ovechkin Returns to Full Practice, Opener Still Uncertain
Alex Ovechkin took part in a full Capitals practice for the first time since his lower-body injury flared up. Coach Spencer Carbery called it a positive step but did not guarantee Ovechkin for Friday's preseason game. The captain is aiming to be ready for the Oct. 2 season opener at Carolina.
Ovechkin's Thursday session marked a clear turnaround from Wednesday, when he left the ice after just a few minutes. He skated the entire workout alongside Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard. Coach Carbery acknowledged the progress but deferred a decision on Friday's exhibition against Boston until consulting athletic trainer Jason Serbus.
The captain has yet to appear in any preseason game this fall. Last year, a similar lower-body issue sidelined him for most of camp, yet he went on to play all 82 regular-season contests and scored 32 goals. With 929 career goals, he remains the NHL's all-time leader. Washington finishes its preseason Saturday in Philadelphia before opening at Carolina on Oct. 2.
Ovechkin's status for the season opener could influence early-season viewership and fan engagement, particularly given his pursuit of NHL goal-scoring records. A delayed return may affect the Capitals' offensive output in their first games, potentially impacting playoff positioning. For fantasy hockey managers and sports bettors, his availability is a key variable. However, given his history of playing through similar issues, the broader societal impact is likely minimal, confined mostly to hockey enthusiasts and the team's immediate fanbase.
