NHL Merges Jets Eras, Hawerchuk Tops Franchise Records
The NHL announced that the Winnipeg Jets' statistical history now includes the original Jets and Atlanta Thrashers eras. Dale Hawerchuk becomes the franchise leader in goals and points, while Thomas Steen leads in assists. Mark Scheifele, who had been chasing those records, now has new benchmarks to pursue.
Scheifele's current career totals with the franchise stand at 907 points, 372 goals, and 535 assists across 961 games. These numbers put him within reach of the newly consolidated benchmarks this season. Hawerchuk's record-setting 929 points and 379 goals were amassed in just 713 games, highlighting the efficiency of his original tenure.
The consolidation also carries a personal dimension for Scheifele, who spent three seasons under Hawerchuk's coaching with the OHL's Barrie Colts before Hawerchuk's death in 2020. The league's decision keeps the Arizona Coyotes' 1996-2024 history separate. Winnipeg's season opener is scheduled for Oct. 2 at home against Boston.
This consolidation could reshape how fans and players value franchise milestones, giving current Jets players like Scheifele a more tangible historical target. It may also influence how other NHL teams with relocated histories approach their own record books. For the Winnipeg community, it reinforces a continuous narrative of hockey identity, potentially deepening fan engagement and pride in the team's long-term story.
