Islanders Ink Logan Stanley to One-Year Contract
The New York Islanders signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Logan Stanley to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Sunday. Stanley had gone unsigned throughout the summer after finishing last season with Buffalo, which acquired him from Winnipeg at the trade deadline. New York plans to use him as a stay-at-home option next to Scott Mayfield, giving offensive defensemen like Tony DeAngelo and Matthew Schaefer more room to contribute.
Stanley, 28, is a 6-foot-7, 231-pound defenseman who reached unrestricted free agency for the first time and remained available into late September. Buffalo obtained him from Winnipeg on March 6; he recorded five assists in 17 regular-season games, then none in eight playoff contests as the Sabres advanced to Round 2.
Last season split between Winnipeg and Buffalo, he totaled 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 76 games but did not hold a regular role under Lindy Ruff. New York envisions him beside Scott Mayfield, allowing Tony DeAngelo and Matthew Schaefer more offensive freedom. The team also reassigned Kashawn Aitcheson, Isaiah George and Cole Eiserman and waived Vitek Vanecek.
The signing may matter most to Islanders fans and the team’s blue-line balance, potentially giving New York a steadier defensive presence while opening chances for younger or more offensive defensemen.
