Derry Scherhant: Freiburg winger called into Germany squad
Derry Scherhant has been selected in Jürgen Klopp's first Germany squad after an impressive start to the season with Freiburg. The 23-year-old winger came through several Berlin youth clubs and Hertha's academy before establishing himself in Bundesliga 2 and joining Freiburg in 2025. He has one goal and three assists in four league games this term, following a first Freiburg season with five Bundesliga goals and a Europa League final run.
Scherhant is uncapped at senior level but has two U21 caps. Before Hertha, he played for Viktoria Berlin, Tennis Borussia and Berliner SC, joining Hertha's academy just before turning 18. Scherhant's rise from Berlin youth football to Germany's senior squad could encourage young players who take less direct paths, showing that progress through lower leagues and Bundesliga 2 remains possible.
