Viñales Cleared to Race in Japan After Shoulder Layoff
Red Bull KTM Tech3 has confirmed that Maverick Viñales will return to MotoGP competition at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi. Viñales has been out since July’s German Grand Prix while recovering from corrective shoulder surgery, and Pol Espargaró filled in at several events. After evaluations at Red Bull’s Athlete Performance Centre, he was cleared to rejoin Enea Bastianini for Round 16.
Maverick Viñales will race again for Red Bull KTM Tech3 at Motegi, the 16th round of the 2026 season. His absence began at July’s German Grand Prix because of shoulder problems that required corrective surgery and then produced further complications. During his recovery, KTM reserve and test rider Pol Espargaró substituted at Silverstone, Aragón, Misano and Austria.
Clearance came after medical and fitness checks at Red Bull’s Athlete Performance Centre. Viñales said he is not fully fit but feels prepared to progress gradually, while team manager Nicolas Goyon stressed that the squad prioritized a proper recovery over a rushed comeback. His return restores Tech3’s regular pairing with Enea Bastianini.
Viñales’s return may lift interest in the Japanese Grand Prix among MotoGP followers, especially his fans and Tech3 supporters, while giving the team a fuller rider lineup for the season’s overseas phase. For Motegi’s local audience and broadcast viewers, a familiar name back on the grid could add narrative attention. It may also highlight athlete recovery and workplace safety in high-risk sport, though his gradual approach suggests expectations should remain modest.
