Vancouver Sees Breakout Potential in Liam Ohgren

Liam Öhgren, acquired as part of the Quinn Hughes trade package, has impressed Vancouver's coaching staff with his energy and scoring ability. The 2022 first-round pick was Minnesota's 19th overall selection and had success in Swedish junior and international play, including captaining Sweden at the U18 and World Junior tournaments. He scored his first goal for the Canucks against the Rangers and could take on a larger role in 2026-27.
Liam Öhgren arrived in Vancouver as part of the return for Quinn Hughes. Minnesota chose him 19th overall in 2022 after he dominated Swedish junior play and earned SHL minutes. He captained Sweden to U18 gold and later a World Junior silver.
With Vancouver, he ended a scoring drought by netting against the Rangers. His shot has reached 91.9 mph, and his speed metrics rate well among forwards. Coach Manny Malhotra may use him beside Brock Boeser and Marco Rossi, with a possible look alongside Elias Pettersson.
A breakout by Öhgren could energize Canucks fans and boost local game-day culture. It may give young hockey players in Vancouver and Sweden a relatable example of persistence after a slow start. If he earns a larger role, his success could increase interest in rookie development and international scouting, though the effect would likely remain modest and largely confined to hockey audiences.
