Carolina Waives Goaltender Cayden Primeau

The Hurricanes placed goaltender Cayden Primeau on waivers Wednesday with the intent of assigning him to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Primeau signed a two-year, one-way contract with Carolina in September after posting a .916 save percentage in 39 AHL games last season. He is likely to be Carolina’s No. 3 goaltender behind Brandon Bussi and Pyotr Kochetkov.
Primeau, 27, is from Farmington Hills, Mich. Carolina signed him Sept. 9 to a two-year, one-way deal with a $912,500 average annual value. With Chicago last season, he went 21-11-7 with four shutouts and a .916 save percentage in 39 regular-season games, then posted a 9-9 record and .913 save percentage in 18 playoff contests.
Carolina originally acquired him from Montreal in June 2025 for a 2026 seventh-round pick. Montreal drafted him No. 199 overall in 2017. He has appeared in 58 NHL games for the Canadiens and Maple Leafs, recording a 15-25-7 record, two shutouts, and an .882 save percentage.
The waiver move may chiefly affect Primeau's immediate career path, as he could begin the year in the AHL instead of on Carolina's NHL roster. Chicago Wolves fans and Carolina's goaltending depth could gain an experienced option, while another club may claim him and change those plans. For NHL followers, it also illustrates how waiver rules can shape opportunities for depth players and roster decisions for teams.
