Oilers' Hyman Expected to Miss Around Two Weeks With Upper-Body Injury

Zach Hyman did not travel to Vancouver and will sit out Edmonton's game against the Canucks because of an upper-body injury. Coach Mike Babcock described him as day-to-day but suggested that means roughly two weeks. Edmonton is also without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Babcock said the absences give younger or newer players a chance to take on larger roles.
Hyman was absent from Edmonton’s trip to Vancouver and will sit out Thursday’s game. The winger was hurt in the club’s last exhibition contest versus Calgary. He still logged 20:33 in Tuesday’s overtime defeat to Vancouver, including 5:04 with the man advantage, recording three shots and two hits without a point.
Babcock’s “day-to-day” label has meant about two weeks for both Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who is on IR with a lower-body issue. Edmonton also has Matt Savoie on LTIR and Frederik Andersen reportedly unavailable until December. Hyman contributed 10 power-play goals last season, when he posted 31 goals and 52 points in 58 games.
The Oilers’ injury absences could affect teammates, coaches, and fans by shifting responsibilities to less experienced players and changing early-season expectations. For younger or newer players, the openings may create valuable chances to earn larger roles and visibility. Supporters and media may see more lineup experimentation, while the team’s results could influence local mood and interest. The situation may also remind audiences how quickly sports narratives change when key athletes are unavailable.
