Ukraine's Motorsport Body Pressures FIA to Punish Russia Over Occupied Territories
The Ukrainian Automobile Federation has formally requested that FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem sanction Russia's motorsport body for establishing offices in Ukrainian regions under occupation. The FAU's complaint centers on the RAF establishing offices in Crimea, Sevastopol, and the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions—areas the UN recognizes as Ukrainian. The FAU has escalated the matter to the FIA's ethics committee and international court of appeal after receiving no response from the senate.
This appeal follows the FIA's 3 August decision to lift the ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors, which had been in place since February 2022. Ukraine's sports minister publicly criticized the move, while the Russian Embassy in London praised it as a return to common sense. The FIA has not yet commented on the FAU's latest demands.
