Maurice says Barkov’s latest knee issue is unrelated to last year’s injury
Aleksander Barkov left Florida’s game in San Jose during the second period after his left knee appeared to buckle in a board scrum. Coach Paul Maurice said the problem is not connected to the right knee injury that cost Barkov the entire 2025-26 season, and more information should come Friday. Barkov had returned to play in the season opener and had also helped Finland win gold at the IIHF World Championship.
Barkov exited Thursday’s San Jose game in the middle frame after his left knee gave way during a board battle involving Darnell Nurse and Zack Ostapchuk. He discarded his glove while heading off and did not come back; Florida fell 4-3 in overtime.
The concern is heightened because he missed all of 2025-26 after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee at the start of 2025 training camp and having surgery the next day. He returned at the IIHF World Championship, helping Finland win gold with 11 points in 10 games, then logged 20:32 in the opener.
Barkov’s health could affect the Panthers’ competitive outlook and the team’s fan base, while his profile in Finland may heighten interest there. If the issue proves minor, the impact may be limited to lineup uncertainty; a longer absence could shape Florida’s season and amplify discussions about player workload and injury recovery. Teammates, coaches, and supporters may feel immediate concern, but medical clarity expected Friday should temper speculation.
