Red Wings, Kings Lead Pursuit of Unsigned Laine

Unsigned free agent Patrik Laine has drawn the most interest from the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings, according to Finnish broadcaster Antti Mäkinen. Both clubs are reportedly in a holding pattern, with Detroit dealing with other roster issues and Los Angeles potentially having power-play room because Kevin Fiala remains out. No signing appears imminent.
Laine, 28, has been unsigned since his four-year, $34.8 million deal ended. He last appeared in an NHL game on Oct. 16, 2025, then had core-muscle surgery after five games with Montreal and did not return despite medical clearance in January. He recorded one assist in 2025-26.
Detroit is handling Dylan Larkin's trade request fallout and Simon Edvinsson's unsigned status, while Los Angeles lacks Kevin Fiala, out since a February Olympic leg break and later procedure. Mäkinen also noted clubs wonder about Laine's dressing-room impact, though he is training independently and ready.
If Laine signs, Detroit or Los Angeles fans could see a short-term boost in interest and hope for improved scoring, especially on the power play. Teammates and coaches may face pressure to integrate a high-profile player with reported locker-room questions. For Laine, a new contract may offer a chance to rebuild his career, while other unsigned players could see how teams value past production versus recent injury and availability.
