Underwood Says Mirkovic Making Progress, No Timetable Set

Illinois coach Brad Underwood said forward David Mirkovic is gradually recovering from foot surgery. Mirkovic has been working in the AlterG and pool while doing about 20 minutes of light individual activity each day. He is scheduled for another exam early next week, and the program is prioritizing a full recovery over a quick return.
Mirkovic, a sophomore Illinois forward, had foot surgery almost two months ago. Early reports suggested he might return around now, but that has not happened. He is working with athletic trainer Justin Games on an AlterG treadmill and in pools, plus roughly 20 minutes of low-intensity solo drills daily. Another exam is set for early next week.
Illinois has not provided a return date. The staff has previously allowed early-season injury timelines to stretch, as with Andrej Stojakovic's preseason knee issue last year. Mirkovic is expected to be a key part of the 2026-27 offense. The opener against FDU is Nov. 2, with road games at Texas Tech and Duke later in November.
Mirkovic's recovery could affect Illinois' early-season performance and, if the team reaches March Madness, its postseason prospects. Fans, teammates, coaches, and opponents may feel the impact through lineup decisions and expectations. A cautious return may protect his long-term health, though it could delay his on-court contributions.
