Holmstrom Returns to Hometown Club as Head Coach

Former Detroit Red Wings winger Tomas Holmstrom is now the head coach of Pitea HC, his hometown club in Sweden's third-tier Hockeyettan. He joined in January 2026 alongside Daniel Rankvist and the pair extended their stay for the 2026-27 season after the team improved. Holmstrom, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, also runs a construction and machinery business and had been away from hockey for several years before taking the job.
Holmstrom spent 15 seasons with Detroit, winning four Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002, 2008) and Olympic gold with Sweden in 2006. He retired in January 2013, citing knee problems, then largely stepped away from hockey for years while running a construction and machinery business in northern Sweden.
Pitea HC, his boyhood club, plays in Hockeyettan, Sweden's third tier. He and Daniel Rankvist took over in January 2026, after the previous coaching pair was dismissed, initially for seven weeks, then extended for 2026-27. His father was the club's equipment manager for over 30 years, and his son now plays forward there.
A four-time Stanley Cup winner returning to coach a third-tier hometown club could draw attention to lower-league Swedish hockey, potentially boosting local interest, attendance and youth participation in Pitea. His presence may also encourage former professionals to consider grassroots coaching roles. For the players, particularly his son, it may bring both opportunity and added scrutiny. The wider effect likely remains modest, confined largely to the club and its community rather than the sport nationally.
