Portnoy stands by Underwood NIL deal amid Michigan struggles
Dave Portnoy told Front Office Sports he has no regrets about the NIL arrangement that helped bring Bryce Underwood to Michigan, even as the Wolverines sit at 3-2. Underwood, the top-ranked recruit in the 2024 cycle, signed a four-year deal expected to pay about $3 million this season. Portnoy said the sport now operates like professional athletics and that Michigan's problems should not be pinned entirely on its quarterback.
Portnoy told Front Office Sports he remains comfortable with the arrangement that helped bring Underwood to Ann Arbor. The quarterback, ranked No. 1 in the 2024 cycle, agreed to a four-year deal projected to pay around $3 million this season. Portnoy helped link him with Oracle founder Larry Ellison and Jolin Ellison during recruitment.
Michigan is 3-2 after losing to Minnesota. Underwood has completed 59.3% of passes for 881 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions, adding 212 rushing yards and two scores. Against Minnesota, he threw for 101 yards with two picks. Coach Kyle Whittingham said he would review the whole offense, while noting the defense has performed well.
This story may shape how fans, donors, and athletes view high-dollar NIL deals, especially when teams struggle. It could intensify debates over whether collectives and boosters should tie payments to performance or treat them like professional contracts. For athletes, it may add pressure and scrutiny; for universities, it may affect donor confidence and recruiting narratives. The transfer portal could remain a factor if expectations are not met.
