After Zary Waiver Move, Flames May Consider Tsyplakov

Maxim Tsyplakov was acquired by Calgary in the trade that sent Simon Nemec to the Flames. His struggles have continued into the preseason and early 2026-27, with Calgary scoring only three goals in three games. After Connor Zary was placed on waivers Monday, Tsyplakov could be the next roster move.
Maxim Tsyplakov developed in Spartak Moscow’s youth system and debuted in the KHL during 2017-18. He split time between the KHL and VHL before a 2023-24 breakout: 31 goals and 47 points in 65 KHL games. That earned an entry-level deal with the New York Islanders on May 17, 2024.
His NHL rookie year produced 10 goals and 35 points in 77 games, leading to a two-year, $4.5 million extension in June 2025. His production then collapsed: one goal and two points in 27 games before a trade to New Jersey, followed by one goal and one assist in 22 games there.
For Calgary supporters, another roster move involving Tsyplakov could signal a fuller commitment to rebuilding and create more NHL opportunities for younger forwards. It may also affect player careers and team chemistry, while local businesses tied to game-day attendance might see modest shifts if fan optimism changes. The impact likely remains limited to the hockey community, but waivers and trades can shape how fans view management’s direction.
