P.K. Subban to Voice Coach in CBC's Animated Screech Owls Adaptation

P.K. Subban will voice Coach P.K. and serve as an executive producer on a new animated adaptation of Roy MacGregor's Screech Owls books. The 26-episode series is scheduled to debut on CBC in fall 2027, with French-language airings on Radio-Canada and TFO in winter 2028. The NHL is involved as a production partner, and Sarah Nurse will make a cameo.
P.K. Subban, a former Norris Trophy winner, will lead the animated Screech Owls as Coach P.K. while also executive producing. The 26-episode series, with 11-minute installments, adapts Roy MacGregor’s children’s hockey books. CBC will air it in English in fall 2027; Radio-Canada and TFO will show French versions in winter 2028. The NHL is a production partner and controls exclusive U.S. and Nordic distribution.
Shaftesbury and Sphere Animation are producing. Shaftesbury previously made a live-action Screech Owls series for YTV in 2001, and Jonathan Malen, a star of that show, will voice Trevor. Sarah Nurse is set for a cameo, and the team’s “Power Pulse” suits push the story toward superhero territory. Gaming, consumer products, and licensing are also being considered.

The series could introduce hockey to younger viewers through a familiar, action-driven cartoon format, potentially reaching families who might not otherwise follow the sport. Subban’s role as Coach P.K. may offer a visible role model, especially for children from communities underrepresented in hockey media. With CBC, Radio-Canada, TFO, and NHL involvement, the show could extend beyond television into games and merchandise, shaping how some young audiences first encounter the sport. Its success may depend on whether the superhero elements and cameos connect with kids while retaining the books’ teamwork themes.
