Medical expert offers early assessment of Marchand's knee injury

Brad Marchand injured his left knee Tuesday in Los Angeles after a stick caught him high and he fell awkwardly into the post. A doctor said the concern is an MCL injury, with a high ankle sprain also possible, and estimated a grade 2 issue could mean 4-6 weeks out while viewing an ACL tear as unlikely. The Panthers are already missing Aleksander Barkov for six to eight weeks, and Marchand had just returned from core surgery.
The injury occurred in Los Angeles with 53 seconds left in the second period. A stick from Brandt Clarke struck Marchand high, and he spun into the right post, needing help off and unable to put weight on his left leg. Florida planned to evaluate him Thursday. Marchand was in his second game back after core surgery.
Dr. Harjas Grewal said the main worry is an MCL issue, though the same play could also produce a high ankle sprain. He suggested a grade 2 problem might sideline Marchand four to six weeks, while an ACL tear appears unlikely. This came as Aleksander Barkov was already set to miss six to eight weeks.
The injury could ripple through the Panthers’ locker room, fan base, and the wider NHL audience, especially with Barkov already out. Teammates may carry a heavier workload, while supporters could see a less stable lineup and altered expectations. For Marchand, the uncertainty may affect his season and career trajectory. If the issue is less severe, those effects could be brief; if not, attention and pressure around Florida may grow.
