Rahm set to exit LIV Golf after rejecting revised terms
Jon Rahm will leave LIV Golf after rejecting terms for the league's proposed next phase, his lawyer told a bankruptcy court. LIV has secured financing to continue toward 2027 but owes players money, with Rahm among the largest creditors. A separation agreement is being discussed and could be finalized in November.
Jon Rahm, a 31-year-old Spanish two-time major champion, joined LIV in December 2023 after leaving the PGA Tour, in a move reportedly valued at £222m ($300m). He won a third consecutive LIV season title in August. LIV filed for Chapter 11 in September after Saudi funding ended, and has arranged up to $300m from BC Partners Credit for a possible 2027 season.
Court filings list Rahm as the largest unsecured creditor, owed $7.5m, while players collectively are owed at least $45m. LIV and Rahm's representatives are negotiating a separation agreement, with a 5 November hearing targeted. Sergio Garcia received permission for his contract to be terminated and rejected, potentially freeing him to talk to other parties.
The exit of a star like Rahm could reshape professional golf's talent landscape, potentially affecting fans, sponsors, and tournament organizers. If LIV's restructuring falters, players owed money may face financial uncertainty, while rival tours may gain opportunities to re-sign prominent names. Ryder Cup eligibility and media coverage may also shift, though outcomes remain uncertain.
