Ramon Vega announces bid to challenge Infantino for Fifa presidency

Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega says he will run in next year's Fifa presidential election. He is the first candidate to confirm a challenge to incumbent Gianni Infantino. Vega, who also played for Celtic and Watford, previously tried to enter the 2019 race but could not secure enough support.
Vega, 55, represented Switzerland 23 times and played for Tottenham, Celtic and Watford before retiring in 2004 and moving into finance. He is the first confirmed challenger to incumbent Gianni Infantino. He explored a Fifa leadership bid in 2015 after Sepp Blatter’s suspension, then sought to challenge Infantino in 2019 but lacked the required five federation nominations from 211 members.
Fifa hopefuls need a member association’s proposal, recent active involvement in football, and eligibility clearance. Infantino faces criticism after a collapsed plan to sell shares in the World Cup to outside investors; Uefa, Concacaf and the AFC have urged him to leave, while AFC’s Sheikh Salman has proposed an internal reform working group.
If Vega’s challenge gains traction, it may focus public attention on how football’s governing body is run, affecting players, fans, volunteers and national associations who rely on Fifa decisions. A contested election could encourage debate about transparency and trust, though any practical change would depend on member federations’ support. For supporters worldwide, the contest may shape perceptions of the World Cup’s governance and the sport’s priorities, but its social impact remains uncertain.
