Wolff dismisses claims Mercedes favors one F1 driver

Toto Wolff rejected speculation that Mercedes is giving preferential treatment to one of its drivers in the championship fight. The Mercedes team principal called the claims nonsensical and criticized social media users for spreading them. He insisted the team has always aimed to provide equal equipment to both drivers.
Wolff spoke at Friday’s FIA press conference at Singapore’s Marina Bay circuit, sharing the stage with Zak Brown and Alan Permane. He rejected unsourced suggestions that Mercedes had tilted toward one driver in the title race, invoking past Lewis Hamilton fan theories and joking about a button triggering a George Russell engine failure.
The speculation followed upgrade decisions and more technical setbacks on Russell’s car than on Kimi Antonelli’s. Asked by Sky Sports F1’s Craig Slater about Russell trailing Antonelli, Wolff recalled Alain Prost’s warning about drivers sensing shifting team politics. He said he has pursued balance since Williams, including during Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s rivalry, and called Kimi and George long-term team members.
This exchange may shape fan discourse around Mercedes and its drivers, potentially intensifying online debates about team fairness. Supporters of Russell or Antonelli could feel their concerns validated or dismissed, while social media users may see Wolff’s blunt response as either refreshing or polarizing. The episode could also draw more attention to how teams manage two title contenders, affecting sponsor and audience perceptions.
