Billy Sharp calls time on 22-year playing career at 40
Billy Sharp has retired from professional football at the age of 40. The Sheffield United legend scored 299 goals across a 22-year career that included spells with several English clubs. He had been a free agent since leaving Doncaster Rovers at the end of last season, where he scored a hat-trick in his final match.
The 40-year-old forward has formally ended his playing days. His career covered 22 seasons and eight clubs: Rushden & Diamonds, Scunthorpe United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield United.
He turned out 377 times for his hometown Blades. His final outing came with Doncaster, where he netted three times versus Peterborough before becoming a free agent. Over the whole journey, he found the net 299 times.
For supporters of Sheffield United and his other clubs, the retirement may prompt reflection on a long career built on persistence and goalscoring. It could also offer younger players a model of adaptability across different teams and environments. In local football communities, his departure may be felt as the close of a familiar chapter, while shared memories of his goals could help sustain fan connection and intergenerational discussion about the game.
