Capitals Place Sandin on LTIR, Roy on IR, Recall Holl

Washington placed Rasmus Sandin on long-term injured reserve and Matt Roy on injured reserve on Monday. Sandin is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in April, while Roy has been out since an Oct. 3 lower-body injury. The Capitals recalled Justin Holl from Hershey to help a short blue line.
Washington formalized two defensive roster moves Monday. General manager Chris Patrick said Rasmus Sandin goes to long-term injured reserve and Matt Roy to injured reserve, while Justin Holl comes up from Hershey. Neither designation reflects a fresh setback.
Sandin has not appeared this season as he recovers from an ACL tear sustained April 11 versus Pittsburgh. The team’s six-to-nine-month estimate points to a return between late October and late January, with Patrick hoping for the earlier side. Roy has been sidelined since an Oct. 3 lower-body issue against Tampa Bay; his IR placement can be backdated, so he is eligible once cleared. Holl, 34, has 405 NHL games with Toronto and Detroit and a one-year, $900,000 deal.
The Capitals’ blue-line absences could affect team performance and fan engagement in Washington, while also highlighting the physical toll of professional hockey. Teammates may face heavier minutes, and supporters may see a less stable defense. For the broader public, such injury news may serve as a reminder of workplace risk in contact sports, though its direct societal impact is likely limited to sports audiences.
