Kovač signs new Dortmund deal and targets more progress

Niko Kovač has signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund through 2029. Since taking over in February 2025, he has won 35 of 53 Bundesliga matches and has the club's highest points-per-game average. Dortmund currently sit two points ahead of Bayern Munich after five matchdays, and Kovač wants more than just competing with Bayern.
Kovač, 54, took charge in February 2025 and has since overseen 53 Bundesliga fixtures, winning 35. His points-per-match return is the best any Dortmund coach has managed. The five-time German champions were 11th when he arrived, after finishing fifth the season before.
Dortmund lead Bayern by two points after five matchdays. Last term, a February win over Wolfsburg cut the gap to three, before a 3-2 Klassiker loss. The squad is among the league’s youngest, with strong defensive records and emerging midfield links.
The extension may give Dortmund supporters and matchday businesses a sense of stability, while heightened title competition could draw more viewers to the Bundesliga. Young players might see a clearer pathway under a coach with a strong record. Rival fans could feel more tension, but outcomes remain uncertain and depend on results.
