Dortmund stages charity street soccer event in Times Square
Borussia Dortmund teamed up with Street Soccer USA to turn Times Square into a street soccer venue as part of the 14th annual Times Square Cup. The event was a stop on the BVB World Street Series, which had previously visited Los Angeles and Tokyo. More than 300 young players from New York and New Jersey took part in four-a-side matches, while Patrick Owomoyela joined the SSUSA Open Cup and a Top Baller contest closed the day.
Dortmund joined forces with Street Soccer USA, a charity using football to address poverty, for New York's 14th Times Square Cup. The occasion doubled as a stop on the BVB World Street Series presented by CSTS, following earlier editions in Los Angeles and Tokyo.
A temporary arena with two compact pitches hosted more than 300 young participants from New York and New Jersey in four-a-side BVB Youth Cup games. The Women's Cup and SSUSA Open Cup followed, with former Dortmund and Germany player Patrick Owomoyela leading a team in the latter alongside athletes, artists and influencers from around the world. A one-on-one Top Baller contest concluded.
This event may strengthen ties between a major European club and diverse youth communities in New York and New Jersey, giving participants access to a memorable sporting experience in an iconic public space. It could also raise the profile of Street Soccer USA's poverty-focused work and encourage more local involvement in football. For Dortmund, such outreach may build goodwill among American fans, while the charity's message about football's unifying potential may resonate beyond the pitch.
