Hakstol Leaves Colorado to Lead Arizona State Program

Dave Hakstol is set to leave his assistant role with the Colorado Avalanche and become Arizona State's head coach, according to Elliotte Friedman. Matt Greene is expected to join the Sun Devils' staff. Hakstol steps into a program that has been unsettled since Greg Powers was put on leave.
Arizona State is turning to Dave Hakstol, currently a Colorado assistant, to fill its head-coaching vacancy. Elliotte Friedman reported the move, adding that Matt Greene is likely to join the staff. Greene, Hakstol’s first captain at North Dakota, played 615 NHL games and won two Stanley Cups with Los Angeles.
Hakstol previously coached North Dakota to seven Frozen Fours, then led Philadelphia and Seattle, guiding the Kraken to their first playoff appearance. Arizona State has been in flux since Greg Powers was placed on administrative leave before the season, following an August workout that hospitalized defenseman Matthew Mayich.
The coaching change may affect Arizona State players, recruits, and staff seeking stability after a turbulent period. It could also influence Colorado’s power play and team performance, while giving Hakstol a chance to shape a young college program. Fans, NHL prospects, and college hockey followers may see shifts in development and visibility, though outcomes remain uncertain.
