Detroit placed Jacob Bernard-Docker on waivers Saturday after bringing him back from injured reserve. The 26-year-old defenseman has yet to appear this season because of an upper-body issue. With seven blueliners already on the active roster, the Red Wings want him to clear so he can build readiness with AHL Grand Rapids.
Ottawa chose Bernard-Docker 26th overall in 2018. He later moved to Buffalo in the 2024-25 Josh Norris–Dylan Cozens trade. Last season he had five points in 63 games for Detroit. Across 207 NHL games, he has 29 points. Detroit is 2-3-2 with six points.
This waiver move could mainly affect Bernard-Docker’s career trajectory and Detroit’s defensive depth. If he clears, he may get regular AHL minutes to regain form, while Grand Rapids could receive an experienced NHL defenseman. Red Wings fans may see short-term roster flexibility, though the broader public impact is likely limited to sports audiences.
