ByteDance Raises $29.6 Billion Loan for AI and Data Center Growth

ByteDance has secured a $29.6 billion loan from nearly 30 banks, one of Asia's largest financing packages this year. The funds are expected to support AI projects and data center expansion outside China, with the loan coordinated by Citigroup and JPMorgan. Chinese banks subscribed to more than 60% of the loan, and ByteDance has become an offtaker for data centers in Southeast Asia.
The financing, arranged by Citigroup and JPMorgan, ranks as Asia's second-largest corporate loan this year, trailing only SoftBank's $40 billion package. Notably, the loan is unsecured, a rare structure for a deal of this magnitude, reflecting strong lender confidence in ByteDance's creditworthiness. Chinese banks provided over 60% of the total.
ByteDance intends to use the funds for general corporate purposes, but the capital is widely expected to fuel its AI initiatives and overseas data center commitments. The company has signed offtake agreements for computing capacity in Southeast Asian facilities. This investment supports its dual competition: against Chinese rivals on infrastructure and global giants on multimodal AI models, while also exploring chip purchases from domestic suppliers like Iluvatar CoreX.
This massive unsecured loan could reshape the global AI infrastructure landscape, potentially accelerating data center construction in Southeast Asia and intensifying competition among tech giants. It may also signal growing financial interdependence between Chinese tech firms and international banks, which could have implications for technology transfer and data governance. Consumers might benefit from faster AI innovation, but the concentration of capital in a few players could also raise concerns about market dominance and the environmental footprint of expanded data centers. The deal's success may encourage similar mega-financings for other AI-focused companies.
