Wild's Gustavsson Still Weeks From Return After Hip Surgery

Minnesota coach John Hynes indicated Filip Gustavsson will not be back for at least another month as he recovers from offseason hip surgery. The goaltender has only begun skating on his own and has not yet practiced with the team, making mid-November the earliest likely return. Jesper Wallstedt has handled most of the starts in his absence, posting a 1.99 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.
Gustavsson, 28, is in year one of a five-year, $34 million extension. Last season he went 28-15-6 but faded late, dropping his final two regular-season starts and his lone playoff outing. Minnesota put him on injured reserve before opening night, also placing defenseman Brock Faber there.
With Gustavsson out, Jesper Wallstedt has started seven of eight games and owns a 1.99 GAA and .921 save percentage. Calvin Pickard made one start, a 5-2 loss in Winnipeg. Once Gustavsson returns, Minnesota could have three starting-caliber goalies, and GM Bill Guerin may eventually trade one; Wallstedt is a pending RFA with arbitration rights and could command over $8 million.
The timeline may affect Minnesota's early-season competitiveness and how fans experience games, while also shaping Wallstedt's workload and contract outlook. A prolonged absence could increase pressure on team management and give other goalies opportunities. For supporters, uncertainty around Gustavsson's recovery may temper expectations, though a cautious return could protect his long-term health.
