Fantilli Supports Early Marchenko Trade Before Blue Jackets Host Leafs

Adam Fantilli said he was glad Columbus moved Kirill Marchenko before the season, arguing that keeping a player who did not want to be there would have been a nightmare. The Blue Jackets sent Marchenko, Elvis Merzlikins and Miles Wood to Toronto for Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a conditional 2027 second-round pick. Marchenko has four goals and six assists in 10 games for the Maple Leafs, while Knies has not recorded a point in five games since scoring in his Columbus debut.
Fantilli said he was pleased Columbus finalized the deal before the season, suggesting an unhappy player remaining all year would have been difficult. Marchenko had requested a trade, and Toronto acquired him with Merzlikins and Wood for Knies, Lorentz, Andrae and a conditional 2027 second-rounder.
Marchenko later signed a six-year extension with Toronto. He has four goals and six assists in 10 games, including a hat trick against Buffalo. Knies scored in his Columbus debut but has no points in five games since. Toronto and Columbus meet Tuesday.
For Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs supporters, the reunion may shape how they view player movement and team chemistry. Fantilli's comments could reinforce the idea that locker-room fit matters, potentially influencing how fans discuss trade requests. Marchenko's early production may affect Toronto's expectations, while Knies's slow start could test Columbus patience. The wider hockey community may see this as another example of how quickly trades can alter narratives around players and franchises.
