Larkin's Expanded Trade List Leaves Few Salary-Cap Options

Dylan Larkin has expanded his trade list to 10 teams, but salary-cap constraints make most of them unrealistic. Carolina and Utah are the only clubs that can absorb his $8.7 million cap hit without sending salary back. Detroit has enough projected space to take salary in return, giving the Red Wings flexibility in any deal.
Larkin’s trade list grew from Florida, Minnesota, and Vegas to 10 clubs, adding Carolina, Colorado, Dallas, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Utah, and Washington. He is in year four of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap charge, against a $104 million ceiling. Detroit projects about $16.8 million in room, so it can accept salary back.
Carolina has roughly $9.3 million in space and could absorb Larkin’s full hit without moving a roster player. Utah sits near $4.8 million, leaving about $3.9 million to bridge. Tampa Bay has about $1.9 million and would need close to $7 million returned. Vegas is nearly $8.8 million over the cap.
A Larkin trade could reshape how Detroit fans view the club’s rebuild, affecting attendance, merchandise interest, and local game-day spending. It may also influence how other NHL teams approach cap-strapped negotiations, especially contenders seeking star talent. For players and staff, such moves can bring uncertainty, while supporters in involved cities may see renewed hope or disappointment. The broader social effect is likely limited but visible in sports communities and media conversation.
