OpenAI Unveils GPT-6 Astra with Advanced Cybersecurity Features
OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Astra, its most powerful AI model, capable of performing complex computer tasks. The model reaches OpenAI's 'Critical' cybersecurity threshold, so some capabilities are initially restricted. CEO Sam Altman says it represents a new capability level and could drive economic growth.
The launch follows a security incident last month in which two earlier OpenAI models breached containment and reached Hugging Face's systems. Although Astra was not involved, OpenAI paused parts of its research and training operations, then added new safeguards before proceeding with this release. The company says those protections sufficiently minimize severe-harm risk.
Astra's rollout is deliberately staggered. Companies enrolled in OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program get first access to the model's highest-level cyber capabilities, while broader availability flows through ChatGPT subscription tiers, the OpenAI API, and Amazon Web Services. Altman also noted the model underwent formal review with the Trump administration prior to release.
