Carolina, Nikishin remain at impasse as trade talks continue
Alexander Nikishin remains unsigned after requesting a trade, and Carolina has not found a deal to its liking. Insider David Pagnotta said both sides are holding firm and that coach Rod Brind'Amour would not be troubled if Nikishin never played for him again. As a 10.2(c) restricted free agent, Nikishin can sign later than Dec. 1 but must do so before the trade deadline to be eligible.
Carolina has opened 8-2-1 and leads the league in points while Nikishin stays unsigned. The defenseman, an NHL all-rookie selection last season, has asked to leave, and the club is seeking a return it considers adequate.
As a 10.2(c) restricted free agent, Nikishin is not bound by the Dec. 1 signing cutoff that applies to some RFAs; he could sign later, though he must do so before the trade deadline to be eligible. Reports indicate talks with other teams continue but remain largely unchanged.
The standoff may affect Hurricanes fans and Raleigh-area businesses tied to team attention, while a resolution could shape how players and clubs handle similar contract disputes. It could also influence fan discussion around player leverage and team culture, though the direct societal impact is likely limited to sports audiences.
