Farrelly, Jonzon Set Early Pace in Italy After Weather Improves

Craig Farrelly and Michael Jonzon both opened with 8-under-par 64 to share the first-round lead at the Sergio Melpignano Senior Italian Open at San Domenico Golf. The course had recovered from heavy rain that left bunkers flooded the previous day. Farrelly made nine birdies with one bogey, while Jonzon went bogey-free and closed with an eagle and a birdie; four players are two shots behind.
Farrelly, an English player, turned in 30 after five front-nine birdies, added four more later, and dropped his lone shot at the par-3 12th. Jonzon, from Sweden, began at the 10th, holed a chip for eagle on the par-4 17th, then made five birdies on his closing nine, finishing without a bogey.
The pair lead by two from Archer, Brown, Khan and Baker, each on 66. Jonzon, a two-time DP World Tour winner, had topped the Staysure Legends Tour Qualifying School earlier in the year and said improved driving and putting helped him find an easier rhythm after recent struggles.
The result may give the Legends Tour a lift by showcasing experienced players and a recovered course. Golf fans could be drawn to follow the senior circuit, while local businesses around San Domenico may see modest visitor interest. For older athletes, the shared lead may reinforce that competitive success can continue later in careers, though the broader social effect is likely limited to sport and tourism audiences.
