Gladbach secure maiden win with five-goal thriller at Stuttgart

Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed their first points of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season by beating VfB Stuttgart 3-2 away. Ermedin Demirović put Stuttgart ahead early, but Joe Scally equalised with a backheel before Shuto Machino and Wael Mohya turned the match around. Demirović scored again late, but Gladbach held on for the victory.
The MHPArena hosted Matchday 7’s opening fixture, with Gladbach seeking to avoid a seventh consecutive league defeat from the campaign’s start. Stuttgart had won only twice in six league games and had lost four. After a midweek Champions League draw with Atlético Madrid, Sebastian Hoeneß changed six starters, giving Leo Sauer a first start; Daiki Hashioka and Shuto Machino entered Alexander Blessin’s lineup.
Demirović’s fifth-minute volley from about 25 metres beat Moritz Nicolas despite the goalkeeper’s touch. Joe Scally’s backheel converted Zento Uno’s volley before half-time, and Wael Mohya struck the bar in first-half stoppage time. After the break, Mohya set up Machino and then headed the third; Demirović replied with an 83rd-minute header.
Gladbach’s first points may lift supporter morale and ease pressure around the club, potentially affecting matchday atmosphere and local businesses that rely on football traffic. For Stuttgart, the loss could deepen frustration among fans and increase scrutiny on coaching decisions. Broadcasters and fantasy-football participants may see renewed interest in Gladbach’s turnaround, while the result’s early-season timing means its wider social impact is likely modest and localized.
