Hyry Set for Extended Look as Stars Lose Duchene to Surgery
Dallas will be without Matt Duchene for roughly three months after he underwent surgery for a core injury. Arttu Hyry, recalled from AHL Texas on Oct. 1, is expected to fill Duchene's spot and receive an extended NHL opportunity. Coach Glen Gulutzan has praised Hyry's faceoff work in the defensive zone, though his line is still working to generate more offensive-zone time.
Duchene’s core procedure sidelines him for about three months, opening a longer NHL window for Hyry. Hyry was recalled from AHL Texas on Oct. 1 and had prior playoff experience against Minnesota, averaging roughly 13 minutes across four games and logging 20:35 in a Game 3 victory.
Gulutzan has used Hyry as Duchene’s replacement and highlighted his preseason play. In five games, Hyry has taken many defensive-zone draws, winning two-thirds, helping Dallas rank second on faceoffs. His line, however, still struggles to sustain offensive-zone possession under the new system.
The injury could shift near-term expectations for Dallas fans and teammates, while giving Hyry and other AHL call-ups a visible chance to prove themselves. It may also affect how coaches distribute defensive-zone faceoffs and penalty-kill minutes. For supporters, the storyline could turn a three-month absence into a test of organizational depth rather than a single-player setback.
