LIV Golf Faces Uncertain Future as Players Exit and Tour Bans Loom

LIV Golf is preparing a smaller version of its circuit, with player names not expected to be revealed until after the coming weekend. Jon Rahm, Adrian Meronk, and David Puig have said they will not take part, while Sergio Garcia's contract has ended and several other players' futures remain unclear. The DP World Tour will not permit its members to play LIV events next season, and the PGA Tour has already taken similar action.
At a bankruptcy hearing, LIV’s lawyer said the LIV 2.0 roster would not be disclosed until after the weekend. The planned circuit is smaller, with lower purses. Sergio Garcia’s contract has ended; Jon Rahm, Adrian Meronk and David Puig have withdrawn. Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Tyrrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau remain unresolved.
The DP World Tour will prohibit members from playing LIV events next season, after the PGA Tour already did so. LIV originally required contracted players to compete in all its tournaments, despite its freedom messaging. Rory McIlroy said some returnees could help the sport’s business, though he described LIV’s concept as badly delivered and much of its funding squandered.
The uncertainty may affect players, caddies, tournament staff, sponsors, and fans who rely on LIV events for income or entertainment. A smaller circuit could reduce opportunities and prize money, while tour bans may push some golfers toward choosing one system over another. For audiences, the sport’s fractured landscape could continue to shape which events and stars are available to watch.
