Semin Backs Ovechkin to Pass Gretzky Before Retiring

Alex Semin told a Russian outlet that he expects Alex Ovechkin to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s combined regular-season and playoff goal total before ending his career. Ovechkin has announced 2026-27 as his final NHL season and needs nine goals to reach 1,016. Semin, a former Washington teammate, said he is confident Ovechkin can handle the challenge despite a slow start.
Semin, a former Washington teammate, discussed Ovechkin’s final NHL season with Match TV’s Pavel Lysenkov. The two played together from 2006 to 2012; Semin later scored 239 goals in 650 NHL games for the Capitals, Hurricanes and Canadiens.
Ovechkin informed teammates on Oct. 5 that 2026-27 would be his last season. He has 1,007 combined regular-season and playoff goals, nine shy of Gretzky’s 1,016. Washington added Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner over the summer, which lets coach Spencer Carbery use Ovechkin in more advantageous attacking situations.
The milestone chase could draw casual fans and Russian-speaking audiences to Capitals broadcasts and NHL coverage, while teammates and coaches may face extra scrutiny over how Ovechkin is used. If he reaches the mark, it may become a widely shared sports moment and prompt discussion about longevity and record-setting, though its broader social impact is likely concentrated among hockey followers and Washington-area communities.
