Capitals Face Multiple Absences as Desharnais Has Surgery

Vincent Desharnais is expected to miss four to six weeks after an appendectomy, leaving a hole on Washington's defense. Logan Thompson is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, while Pierre-Luc Dubois and Justin Sourdif are out due to illness. Charlie Lindgren is likely to start Saturday against Buffalo.
Desharnais underwent an appendectomy Thursday after being hospitalized Wednesday with sudden symptoms. Washington expects him to miss four to six weeks. In nine appearances he had three assists, 18 blocked shots, 22 hits, a team-best plus-9, and career-high 19:24 average ice time, including 3:34 on the penalty kill.
Thompson is day-to-day after a lower-body injury in the loss to Los Angeles and skipped Friday’s practice. Charlie Lindgren is likely to start Saturday against Buffalo; if a backup is needed, Mitch Gibson could be recalled. Dubois and Sourdif both practiced fully Friday after missing five and two games, respectively.
The Capitals’ injury cluster could affect fans, broadcasters, and local businesses tied to game-day routines, as uncertainty around player availability may alter attendance, viewing interest, and betting or fantasy decisions. It may also highlight workplace health and recovery concerns, though the direct societal effect is likely limited to sports audiences and the Washington hockey community.
