Reimer makes AHL history with shutout for Hartford

James Reimer recorded a 2-0 shutout for Hartford on Friday, becoming the oldest AHL goalie to do so in almost 20 years at 38 years and 222 days. It was his first AHL game since signing a professional tryout with the Rangers' affiliate, and his first AHL win since 2011. Reimer joined the organization while New York deals with injuries to Igor Shesterkin and Joonas Korpisalo.
Reimer’s Friday start was his first AHL appearance of the season after joining Hartford on a tryout. The 38-year-old’s previous AHL victory came on Jan. 22, 2011, with Toronto’s farm club, and that game was also a shutout. He now owns five AHL clean sheets.
The Rangers turned to Reimer amid major goaltending absences: Igor Shesterkin is sidelined for the remainder of 2026-27, while Joonas Korpisalo remains unavailable. Reimer also attempted a similar midseason return last year, signing with Ottawa in January after Linus Ullmark’s absences and Leevi Merilainen’s uneven play; he had one PTO game with Belleville.
Reimer’s milestone may give Hartford and AHL audiences a memorable storyline and could reinforce interest in minor-league hockey during NHL injury crises. It may also resonate with older athletes and fans as an example of extended career opportunities, while Rangers supporters could see it as temporary depth insurance rather than a long-term solution. The broader effect is likely modest, centered on sports audiences and local coverage.
