Wilson and Dean available to other clubs after waiver placements

Philadelphia put forward Garrett Wilson on waivers Thursday, and St. Louis did the same with center Zach Dean. Both began the season in the NHL but have seen limited action and have not recorded a point. They can be assigned to the AHL if they clear Friday.
Wilson, 35, signed a one-year two-way deal before the season. He has skated in two games for Philadelphia, averaging 9:49 and posting a minus-2 rating without a point. Most of last season came with Lehigh Valley, where he recorded four goals and 16 assists; his NHL contract carries an $850,000 cap hit and $425,000 minor-league salary.
Dean has played three games for St. Louis, his first NHL action since nine appearances in 2023-24. He is pointless with a minus-4 rating and 9:58 average ice time. Last season he had four goals and 14 points in 36 games for Springfield. His one-year two-way deal pays $850,000 in the NHL and carries a $95,000 AHL cap hit.
These waiver decisions could affect the players’ immediate careers, as a move to the AHL may reduce visibility and earning potential while offering more playing time. Flyers and Blues fans may see roster flexibility and younger call-up options, while AHL clubs and their local audiences could gain experienced NHL personnel. The broader impact is likely limited to hockey communities, but for the individuals involved, the outcome may shape contract prospects and professional stability.
